Candice Swanepoel considered leaving the modeling industry when she was pressured to lose weight. Devastated by the advice to slim down to secure more modeling jobs, the Victoria’s Secret angel contemplated abandoning her modeling career.
The South African native, discovered at a flea market at age 15 and subsequently moving to Europe, faced challenges adapting to her new environment. “Every day, I was working with different people who spoke different languages, so forming relationships was difficult. I just wanted to go home,” she recounted. Accustomed to being criticized for being too thin, the new pressure was a shock. “It was so shocking that it brought me to tears,” she said.
By 2010, Swanepoel had become a Victoria’s Secret angel and she shared her approach to maintaining her physique, likening her workout regimen to that of an athlete to ensure she was always ready for the camera. Speaking to Self magazine, she revealed, “I’m usually up and on-set by 5 a.m. We aim to catch the sunrise and sunset since I do a lot of swimwear shoots.”
She continued, “I consider myself an athlete. I utilize every muscle, particularly my core and arms, when I pose. Feeling strong is crucial for me.”
Raised on a dairy farm, Swanepoel is no stranger to hard work, having observed her father’s dedication from a young age. “My father woke up at 4 every morning to milk the cows. I’d dress in overalls and gum boots and follow him around,” she explained, highlighting the discipline instilled in her from childhood.
